It’s not easy when you’re always travelling for work but you can and should still be consistent with your workouts

The road to my fitness goals is long, windy, and very bumpy. Although it doesn’t have any detours, it has been very challenging to manoeuver through it, mainly because of the many obstacles that I encounter along the way.
One of the biggest ones (which you would know if you’ve been reading my past articles) is my diet. I have talked a lot about it.
The other big challenge that I face constantly is travelling.
In my line of work, I travel quite a fair bit and although some may see travelling for work as some sort of luxury, it’s not so much for me. For people, business/work travel means sitting on a plane and flying off to a big city somewhere around the world, stay in nice 5-star hotels and attend business meetings to close deals, etc.
For me, travelling for work means going deep into estates or forests where internet connectivity is limited, the nearest city would be an hour’s drive away and my 5-star accommodation would be having a nice comfy bed to sleep in.
I’m not complaining that much because I know the work that I do is meaningful and has a good impact on my stakeholders.
That being said, it definitely disturbs my workout routine because it throws my body off what it’s been used when I’m not travelling. I get into a nice routine of working out, eating, and resting. But that changes when I have to travel for work.
So for me, it’s important that despite having to travel quite often, I find a way that enables me to still keep my workouts, diets and rests as consistent as they can be.
And I’ve found a way that somewhat works well for me and it could work for you too, regardless of where you’re travelling to and where you’ll be staying.
Know in advance about your accommodation
Knowing where you’ll be staying during your travels is important. You’ll know if the place has a gym, swimming pool, garden, and how big the room that you’ll be staying in is going to be, etc
This will help you to plan and prepare if you’ll have a proper place to work out like a gym or a swimming pool or would you only have your hotel room to make-do. It will help you to visualize the types of exercises you can do, whether with proper weights and equipment or if you’ll just have to do body-weight exercises.
Where you stay during your travels plays a very important role, not just in terms of comfort for your travels but also for your workouts.
Plan your travelling time and schedule
Planning your travelling time and schedule is important, especially for me because it allows me to rest when I need it and to plan out the spare time I will have to do my workouts.
This is especially more important when it’s work travels because you’ll be spending most of your time doing work, be it site visits or meetings. So the time when you’re not working is when you can do your workouts. And if you’re driving yourself, the driving will be tiring for you. Like for me, I usually spend hours on the road when I have to drive myself. That takes a toll.
So a good plan of my time and schedule will allow me to still put in my workouts even when I’m travelling, especially when it’s work travels.
Search up on the food that will be available in the areas that you’ll be travelling to
As I mentioned at the start of this article, one of the biggest challenges in my fitness journey has always been my diet. I love food and I love to eat, especially food that I know aren’t exactly good for me or my body.
It’s been a constant battle but one that I’m slowly (but surely) winning.
Travelling makes it harder because when I travel for leisure, I’d go to places that have food that I absolutely love. Even when I travel for work, I tend to end up in places where the food is just heavenly.
Knowing in advance the kind of food that will be available at the places that I’ll be at when I travel allows me to plan my meals as well. What to eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
This helps me to control my portions if I plan to eat foods that are not necessarily good for me.
Being consistent and disciplined is hard enough without unwanted distractions, doing that with distractions is even harder but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. At the end of the day, it comes down to how much you really want it and what you’re willing to do to achieve it.
Personally, I would love for my travels to only be personal and for leisure purposes. If given the chance, I’d get rid of any work travels whatsoever but until the day comes where I can actually do that, I will have to just get on with it and do what I can to still be consistent in my workouts and diet.
It’s easy to put the blame on everything else but yourself when things don’t go according to plan. But most of the time, we’re still very much in control of what we do.
And if you’re in a situation like how I am most of the time, having to travel and it messes up your work out routine, why not give the above a try to see if it helps?
I hope it does you as it has me.
